As the academic year begins, LMU reminds our community of the university’s established protocols for responding to interactions with external law enforcement and government agencies, including federal entities. These procedures outline the appropriate steps for handling legal inquiries, law enforcement actions, and related requests.

If you encounter or become aware of external law enforcement on our campuses, please immediately contact the LMU Department of Public Safety (DPS).

  • For the Westchester Campus, direct them to DPS at Foley Annex or call 310.338.2893 or 222 from any campus landline phone.
  • LMU Loyola Law School Campus, direct them to DPS at the main entrance of the parking structure or call 213.736.1121 or x1121.

DPS will verify the agency’s credentials and ensure that appropriate university procedures are followed. Please note that LMU only discloses information when required by a valid court order or in response to an imminent and credible public safety threat.

How LMU Protects Its Campus Community

  • Coordinating Law Enforcement Requests: All law enforcement inquiries, including those from immigration authorities, are managed through LMU’s Department of Public Safety and LMU’s General Counsel’s Office, ensuring compliance with legal requirements while prioritizing campus security.
  • Protecting Privacy under FERPA: LMU adheres to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which prevents the release of student records without proper legal authorization, ensuring that personal information remains protected.
  • International Student Support: LMU’s Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) is continuing to monitor all F-1 and J-1 student records through daily audits of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to support our students and scholars and ensure compliance with federal regulations. OISS is also coordinating a comprehensive response in the event of any student or scholar status changes.
  • Preserving Access to Federal Aid: LMU’s adherence to federal law ensures that students maintain access to crucial financial aid programs, including federal grants and loans that support their education.
