UPDATE: A temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by Judge Angel Kelley on Feb. 10, 2025, has halted the implementation of proposed cuts to health research grants across 22 states including California that filed lawsuits challenging the reductions. This order preserves existing funding levels while legal proceedings continue. A hearing is scheduled for Feb. 21 to further elevate the legality of the proposed changes, at which point the court will determine whether to extend, modify, or lift the order.
On Feb. 8, 2025, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced a shift in its funding policy, capping indirect cost reimbursements at 15% of grants. This change has raised concerns across the research community, given its potential impact on universities, medical schools, and other research institutions that rely on NIH support.
LMU is actively assessing how these changes may impact specific faculty grant recipients. We are working closely with our government relations team and higher education partners to better understand the implications and advocate for policies that support our faculty and students. As more details emerge, we will provide updates through LMU In Brief and other university channels.
